Magazine covers
Whilst working as designers and creative directors for the international music magazine Clash, we worked on around forty five covers during our five year span. It’s infinitely important to create a great cover for a magazine with it being the first thing a potential reader would see on the crowded newsagent’s shelves, so each cover was always a design challenge!
Over our tenure we had the pleasure to design magazine covers with some of the biggest artists in the world, including the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Oasis, Coldplay, Daft Punk, The Arctic Monkeys and even Nirvana and Paul McCartney amongst many others.
Sometimes unique amazing photographs were supplied and adding the artist name and presenting the magazine’s contents with clean professional typography was all that was required. More often than not the photo’s needed something else to capture the excitement we were looking for with the piece, or even occasionally poor photo’s that needed huge amounts of work to reach our standards for the cover. Often the backgrounds have been replaced, major image manipulation and color correction and regularly band members have been completely rearranged.
The covers often featured a cover CD attached in the bottom left corner, meaning key headlines had to be kept away from this area to ensure they were still visible on the shelf.
We were lucky enough to be honoured to win the prestigious magazine industry award ‘Best Magazine Cover Design Of The Year’ within the ‘Lifestyle’ category, in the 2009 Maggies Awards for our Stone Roses anniversary cover!
