ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Gate – issue#5
Canongate Publishing
Catalogue
Canongate Publishing invited us to bring a fresh look to their bi-annual catalogue ‘The Gate’.
Each issue had an overall theme related to the brand, and we quickly decided on the theme of ‘imagination’, something of key importance to the industry and very close to our own hearts. We asked key authors whose new novels featured in the catalogue to write a sentence on ‘what imagination meant to them’. These quotes were used to inspire our illustrations for the publication, which we created to try to capture both the depth of the history of the publishing house and the industry itself, then mixing it up with the fresh punky ethos of the company. I think Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python artwork influenced the project, a style that is one of our favourites of all time, never bettered!
Each page in the catalogue covered a new book release, and although keeping a layout template for each to keep the continuity, we tried to inject each page with some character of the novel they portrayed.
